Interested In Blogging? Check This Advice Out!

The internet has been popular since the mid 1990s, but with so many mobile devices out there, more people are accessing the net than ever before. This sudden surge in connectivity has caused many people to start their own blogs. Take a moment to read these professional blogging tips to help you out in the process if you'd like to open your own blog.

Use the correct spam filter for comments. A CAPTCHA on the registration page is usually sufficient to keep spammers away if you require registration to comment. If you allow anonymous comments, an "advanced CAPTCHA," that is, one that asks the user for "the number of hours in a day" or something similar is usually enough. Avoid services like Akismet, as these produce lots of false positives.

You probably won't have a multitude of readers and comments right away if you are starting your own blog. You will have to search out people and show them you exist. Some ways to do this are with social networking, such as
Facebook and Twitter. Use these sites to communicate with people, not just to post links.

Don't forget to add social media sharing links on your blog. This will ensure that people can share your blog on their profiles for free. Doing this can increase your traffic by quite a bit. If the content's good because people can tell their friends which puts you on multiple pages at once, it will keep increasing.

Make controversial posts. We all know this is what keeps readers coming back for more. If you write a post that everyone agrees with, it will get boring and many people won't want to read it, think about it. When you write controversial things it will keep readers coming back for more.

Although these tips were provided by professional bloggers, they're simple in nature and can be applied by anyone with even modest knowledge of the internet. If you can take your time and implement them as they're written, you should have no trouble at all building and running a successful blog.

Making use of Twitter is crucial for spreading the word about your blog. If you want to have a chance at making an impact, these days, you must put yourself out there on social networks. You can't simply rely on SEO to do all the work for you. Get yourself involved socially, and you'll notice a difference.

To help you get more traffic to your blog and keep up with the latest trends, you should focus some of your attention on submitting your post and blog links to social bookmarking sites. Sites such as StumbleUpon, Digg and Reddit are all great places where you can submit your blog links.

In order to make scanning easier, make sure that your blog posts are structured well. Make use of lists, header tags, and more. Keep in mind that the average reader is not going to want to read sentences and paragraphs that are really long. Therefore, you should make them as short and to the point as possible.

Only those who learn to use it effectively will reap the maximum benefits from this exciting new tool, even though blogging is accessible to anyone with a presence on the internet. Apply the insights you've learned here to get your blogging efforts off to a good start and then, cultivate your skills on a daily basis.

In Portland, yes on affordable housing and a pot tax

It would be difficult to live in Portland and not know that housing availability and affordability combine to test the public's will as never before. The most obvious manifestation of the housing crisis is seen in homelessness. More than 1,800 people sleep outside at night, but at least as many more spend their nights temporarily in public shelters and by makeshift arrangements, sometimes on the living room couches of friends and relatives.

Behind the homeless spectacle, however, lurks a larger piece of the problem: Thousands of Portland renters at the lower end of the income scale — wage workers and seniors on fixed incomes among them — suffer as apartment and house rents soar, with evictions looming. It is estimated that half of Portland families generating less than $37,000 a year for four people are unable to find a suitable rental space in a city now estimated to lack 24,000 affordable homes.

Portland arts tax will be decided by Oregon Supreme Court

The legality of Portland's controversial arts tax will be decided once and for all – by the Oregon Supreme Court.

Justices last month opted to take the case even though a Multnomah County judge and the state Court of Appeals have each ruled the tax is legal under Oregon's constitution.

But the review doesn't necessarily mean the tax will be overturned. Rather, the case seemingly drew interest from the Supreme Court as a first chance to set precedent on the topic of a constitutionally prohibited "head tax."

Portland's Clown Tax is actually unconstitutional, moreover its NOT deductible from your Federal taxes (as an itemized deduction) regardless what those nincompoops at the City Revenue Bureau say on their website.

Other States' constitutions permit head taxes.  IRS says those are NOT deductible.

Portland Cuisine

Portland has been named the best city in the world for street food by several publications, including the U.S. News & World Report and CNN.[148][149] Food carts are extremely popular within the city, with over 600 licensed carts, making Portland one of the most robust street food scenes in North America.[150][151]

Widmer Brewing Company headquarters
Portland has the most total breweries and independent microbreweries of any city in the world,[152][153][154][155][156] with 58 active breweries within city limits[157] and 70+ within the surrounding metro area.[157] The city receives frequent acclaim as the best beer city in the United States and is consistently ranked as one of the top-five beer destinations in the world.[158] Portland has played a prominent role in the microbrewery revolution in the U.S. and is nicknamed "Beertown" and "Beervana" as a result.[159][160][161] Portland's modern microbrewery boom dates to the 1980s, when Oregon state law was changed to allow the consumption of beer on brewery premises. Brewery innovation is further supported by the abundance of beer ingredients produced locally, including two-row barley, over a dozen varieties of local Cascade hops, and pure mountain water from the Bull Run Watershed.

Portland's Economy

Portland's location is beneficial for several industries. Relatively low energy cost, accessible resources, north–south and east–west Interstates, international air terminals, large marine shipping facilities, and both west coast intercontinental railroads are all economic advantages.[114] The U.S. consulting firm Mercer, in a 2009 assessment "conducted to help governments and major companies place employees on international assignments", ranked Portland 42nd worldwide in quality of living; the survey factored in political stability, personal freedom, sanitation, crime, housing, the natural environment, recreation, banking facilities, availability of consumer goods, education, and public services including transportation.[115] In 2012, the city was listed among the 10 best places to retire in the U.S. by CBS MoneyWatch.[116][117]

Adidas has its North America headquarters in the Overlook neighborhood.
The city's marine terminals alone handle over 13 million tons of cargo per year, and the port is home to one of the largest commercial dry docks in the country.[118][119] The Port of Portland is the third largest export tonnage port on the west coast of the U.S., and being located about 80 miles (130 km) upriver, it is the largest fresh-water port.[114] The city of Portland is largest shipper of wheat in the United States,[120][121] and is the second largest port for wheat in the world.[122]

The steel industry's history in Portland predates World War II. By the 1950s, the steel industry became the city's number one industry for employment. The steel industry thrives in the region, with Schnitzer Steel Industries, a prominent steel company, shipping a record 1.15 billion tons of scrap metal to Asia during 2003. Other heavy industry companies include ESCO Corporation and Oregon Steel Mills.[123][124]

Architecture of Portland, Oregon; List of tallest buildings in Portland, Oregon; and Downtown Portland
Portland's cityscape derives much of its character from the numerous bridges that span the Willamette River downtown, several of which are historic landmarks, and Portland has been nicknamed "Bridgetown" for many decades as a result.[47] Three of downtown's most heavily-utilized bridges are more than 100 years old and are designated historic landmarks: Hawthorne Bridge (1910), Steel Bridge (1912), and Broadway Bridge (1913). Portland's newest bridge in the downtown area, Tilikum Crossing, opened in 2015 and is the first new bridge to span the Willamette in Portland since the 1973 opening of the double-decker Fremont Bridge.

Other bridges that span the Willamette river in the downtown area include the Burnside Bridge, the Ross Island Bridge (both built 1926), and the double-decker Marquam Bridge (built 1966). Other bridges outside the downtown area include the Sellwood Bridge (built 1925) to the south; and the St. Johns Bridge, a Gothic revival suspension bridge built in 1933, to the north. The Glenn L. Jackson Memorial Bridge and the Interstate Bridge provide access from Portland across the Columbia River into Washington state.

Portland Topography

Mt. Rainier (left) and Mt. St. Helens (right) photographed from Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland.
Portland is located 60 miles east of the Pacific Ocean at the northern end of Oregon's most populated region, the Willamette Valley. Downtown Portland straddles the banks of the Willamette River, which flows north through the city center and consequently separates the east and west neighborhoods of the city. Less than 10 miles from downtown, the Willamette River flows into the Columbia River, the fourth-largest river in the United States, which divides Oregon from Washington state. Portland is about 100 miles upriver from the Pacific Ocean on the Columbia.

Though much of downtown Portland is relatively flat, the foothills of the Tualatin Mountains, more commonly referred to locally as the "West Hills", pierce through the northwest and southwest reaches of the city. Council Crest Park, the tallest point within city limits, is located in the West Hills and rises to an elevation of 1,073 feet. T

he highest point east of the river is Mt. Tabor, an extinct volcanic cinder cone, which rises to 636 feet. Nearby Powell Butte and Rocky Butte rise to 614 feet and 612 feet, respectively. To the west of the Tualatin Mountains lies the Oregon Coast Range, and to the east lies the actively volcanic Cascade Range.

On clear days, Mt. Hood and Mt St. Helens dominate the horizon, while Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier can also be visible in the distance.
